ALBANY | DENMARK | MT BARKER | FRANKLAND RIVER | PORONGURUP | KATANNING | ONGERUP
The Great Southern of Western Australia is one of the most diverse tourism, food and wine regions you could imagine! Located along the pristine southern coastline and expanding into the farming hinterland it includes major centres Albany, Denmark, Mt Barker, Kojonup and Katanning.
The eleven-day Taste Great Southern festival is over 2 weekends and boasts an incredible line up of more than 30 not-to-be-missed culinary experiences. It hosts long lunches, degustations, premium pairings, festivals, community markets, free events, award winning wine, fantastic local produce, amazing chefs and more.
Great Southern produce is fresh, natural, seasonal and exceptional. Foods like oysters and seafood, cereal crops, beef and lamb, vegetables and milk products all excel on the south coast and the wine varietals such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling compete strongly on the world stage.
The main wine sub regions include the locations of Frankland River, Mt Barker, Porongurup, Denmark and Albany. The broader area of the Hidden Treasures promotes the general northern and eastern part of the region including the towns of Kojonup, Katanning, Gnowangerup, Ongerup and Bremer Bay.
Positioned just prior to the Easter period, the program is designed to attract people to the region while the weather is still enjoyable and businesses are in a strong resource position. Visitors are invited to stay over a few days or a week and to take in more than one event as well as enjoy the local attractions on offer.
Around thirty events are staged involving local venues and attractions, focusing on the seasonal produce and wines. Guest chefs are invited to join the local talent available with venues hosting a range of smaller intimate gatherings to larger events.
The award winning wine and winemakers of the Great Southern are shining bright on the world stage with their spectacular varietals; Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Expect to see, taste and enjoy them at many of the events.
Travel packages are available with a self-drive option and with Taste Great Southern positioned just before Easter and the school holidays. Stay longer and see all the beautiful natural attractions such as Walpole’s Tree Top Walk and The Gap. There is plenty to see, do, eat and drink in the Great Southern!
