Larry Cherubino

Larry’s wife Edwina is a fourth generation Western Australian. Her ancestors, the Egerton-Warburton’s, migrated from England and settled Frankland River in the mid 1800’s. Not just settlement pioneers, they planted the first vines on the banks of the river in 1875.
Unlike Edwina, Larry is a first generation Australian. At school, whilst other kids had meat pies and vegemite sandwiches for lunch, he had roasted pepper sandwiches and homemade sausages. With his uncles and aunts pressing grapes on their farms and in their backyards, and his own family at one time having a small vineyard, it’s clear where his interest in wine originated.
They met in 1994, the same year Larry graduated from horticulture. As he was starting my work in wine, they were also embarking on their life journey.
During his career, he has been head winemaker at Houghton and a traveling consultant. He designed vineyards and wineries, and work took him overseas to New Zealand, USA, France, Italy and South Africa.
Larry and Edwina purchased their first parcel of land in Frankland River in 2005 with dreams of planting their own vineyard.
It was a small parcel that had originally been part of a large, historic land holding called Riversdale. A few years later they had the opportunity to buy the neighbouring vineyard, and acres of prime river and vineyard country. They didn’t hesitate as they knew its potential.
Larry Cherubino Wines began in their spare room in 2005 with the release of one wine. A lot has happened since. The range has grown, and not just in wines – They’ve been joined by three precocious but lovely children, Ilario, Emilio and Giorgio.
Along the way, they’ve been honoured to be listed as Winery Of The Year by respected wine critics such as James Halliday and Matt Skinner. Right now, they’re working to contribute to the development of Western Australia’s unsung wine regions, by introducing and testing promising varietals new to their regions.
