Great Southern Food & Wine Delights
A recent tour exploring food and wine in the Great Southern region has highlighted the abundance of fresh and natural options available when you visit. From oysters to asparagus and Riesling to Pinot Noir, it is amazing! With seven journalists and a chef in tow, the organisers spent three days visiting farms and restaurants. Taking in everything available may have taken three weeks, and with all visitors, we recommend spending plenty of time there and the 2017 Taste Great Southern Festival from 23 March to 9 April may be a good place to start!
Highlights of the tour included a personal tasting with leading winemaker Rob Diletti of Castle Rock, a boat trip pulling oysters and mussels with Great Southern Shellfish and visits to local farms taking in unique potatoes at Bathgate Farm, Shaplands lettuce and vegetables, Torbay Asparagus and Scrupulicious bio dynamic meats.
Restaurants showed off, with Amy Hamilton’s Liberte serving up a fantastic nine-course degustation matched with emerging wines. Garrison Restaurant provided a stunning meal using local produce. The Lake House Denmark served up another local produce feast enjoyed in a shared platter format. Plantagenet Cellar Door had an amazing tasting plate and Ajar Restaurant at Estate 807 delighted with a fresh and flavoursome lunch.
Produce featured included osyters, mussels, marron, asparagus, cheese, berries, pork, all of course supported with fresh vegetables and sides. Wines enjoyed came from the five sub regions of Albany, Denmark, Mt Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River.
Other attractions and venues included with the tour were Due South, National Anzac Centre, The Gap, Rockcliffe Wines, Mrs Jones Café, Dellendale Creamery, Greens Pool, Bartholomews Meadery and Boston Brewery. Exceptional accommodation was provided by The Beach House at Bayside, Celestine Retreat and Karri Mia Bungalows with transport from Busy Blue Bus.
The tour group were flown to Albany courtesy of Rex Airlines.
